Organizer Resources

School-based organizers take the lead in planning their school’s Walk to School day Event! The organizer recruits 5–10 volunteers to plan and host Walk to School Day. The Safe Routes to School team provides support with planning and logistics, a banner, promotional materials, and coordination with special guests.

The Organizer Manual and Tip Sheet are step-by-step guides for planning a successful event. See below for downloadable materials (English and Spanish) to complete each step to organize and promote the event. The Overview is a quick reference tool for yourself and sharing the event with others!

Walk to School Day comes in many shapes and sizes. Use the resources below to create your one-of-a-kind event!

  • Assign volunteers to their posts, to take photos, to counts students as they walk through school entrances,or to collect quotes from kids and parents about their experience.
  • Send Walking School Bus leaders to meeting locations 30 minutes before the event with Walking Safety Tips, Walkability Checklists and Walking School Bus Routes to greet families and walk together in time to get back to school.
